Golders Green NW11

Location

Golders Green is an area in the London Borough of Barnet in England.A smaller suburban linear settlement, near a farm and public grazing area green of medieval origins, dates to the early 19th century. Its bulk forms a late 19th-century and early 20th-century suburb with a commercial crossroads.

The rest is of later build. It is centred approximately 6 miles (9 km) north west of Charing Cross on the intersection of Golders Green Road and Finchley Road.

Housing

After the First World War a large number of Jewish families began moving into the new housing from the crowded East End and synagogues were built to serve the community.

At the same time, the builders Laing laid out the racetrack-shaped Golders Green estate in the south-west corner of the district. The 1930s also saw the erection of mansion blocks in central Golders Green. Among the 1930s detached and semi-detached houses are 30s blocks of flats and some conversions, which are popular with young professionals looking for value alongside great transport links for work.

A number of new-build developments have sprung up in the area, mainly flats and apartments which are popular with investors, renters and first-time buyers with the budget for North London. Flats close to Golders Green Underground station are in high demand, especially from young professionals priced out of more central zones.

As well as smaller flats and studios, Golders Green is also home to a number of larger flats and apartments, which offer family renters something a little different from the large number of 1930s houses available for rent.

Transport

Golders Green is served by two Underground stations: Golders Green and Brent Cross. Both stations are on the Edgware branch of the Northern line and are in Zone 3.

Useful commuter buses include the No 13 to Victoria via Marble Arch, the No 139 to Waterloo via Oxford Circus and No 328 to Chelsea via Kensington High Street. The H2 is a “hail and ride” bus between Hampstead Garden Suburb and Golders Green station and No 210 takes shoppers to Brent Cross.

Schools

There are six state aided primary schools in Golders Green; these include: Brookland infant & junior, Garden Suburb infant & junior, Menorah primary school and Wessex Gardens.

The King Alfred School is located on North End Road and Henrietta Barnett School is located in nearby Hampstead Garden Suburb.

Places of Interest

Essentially operating as a town in its own right, Golders Green is full of independent shops and businesses.

Golders Hill Park, adjoining the West Heath of Hampstead Heath, is a formal park, which includes a small zoo, a walled horticultural garden, pinetum, duckponds, a water garden and a café.

During the summer, children’s activities are organised and there is often live music on the bandstand. Close to the park, also adjoining the West Heath is the Hill, a formal garden with an extensive and imposing pergola.
